11.  Specify initial conditions for the transient.

The mold is initially at an ambient temperature of 80oF and the molten metal is at 2875oF.  Use selecting to obtain the correct set of nodes on which to apply the initial temperatures.  First select the casting area, then select the nodes attached to that area and apply the initial molten temperature to those nodes.  Next, invert the selected set of nodes and apply the ambient temperature to the mold nodes.

Start by plotting areas.

  1. Utility Menu:  Plot
         Areas
  2. Utility Menu:  Select
         Entities
  3. Choose Areas 
  4. Apply 
  5. Pick area 4 (the casting)

Picking location

  1. OK (in picking menu)
  2. Choose Nodes 
  3. Choose Attached to 
  4. Select Areas, all 
  5. Apply 
  6. Utility Menu:  Plot
         Nodes

Results so far

  1. Main Menu:  Solution
         -Loads-Apply
              Initial Condit'n
                   Define
  2. Pick All to use all selected nodes 
  3. Choose TEMP for DOF to be specified 
  4. Enter 2875 for initial value of DOF 
  5. OK 
  6. Utility Menu:  Select
         Entities
  7. Invert (This is an action command; the selected set of nodes is immediately inverted.)  
  8. Cancel to close the Select Entities dialog box 
  9. Utility Menu:  Plot
         Replot
  10. Main Menu:  Solution
         -Loads-Apply
              Initial Condit'n

                   Define
  11. Pick All to use all selected nodes 
  12. Enter 80 for Initial Value of DOF 
  13. OK 

Remmber to always select Everything again when you are finished selecting the nodes!
